History
Casentino
Casentino, the border area, the valley has seen the populations of the Lombards, the Goths and the Byzantines, who have attested their presence on the territory with fortifications since the early Middle Ages. The number of towers, fortresses of castles and fortified villages exceeds 60 units. These almost always stood on the heights, along the roads and at forced passages, to control and dominate the territory. The fortifications of the upper Casentino belonged mainly to the dynasty of the Guidi Counts, while from Bibbiena to Subbiano they were subject to the family of the Bishops-Counts of the city of Arezzo. From the second half of the fifteenth century Casentino followed the fate related to the city of Florence.
