Mugello
The Municipality of Scarperia and San Piero consists of two medieval villages immersed in Mugello countryside. Scarperia, among the most beautiful villages in Italy, according to the official list drawn up by ANCI, boasts a unique medieval history: it became the seat of the vicariate and had all the administrative power of Florence. Near the river Sieve there is the town of San Piero, a medieval village that has seen its importance grow thanks to the bridge over the Sieve, a strategic passage to reach the Passo of Giogo.
The “Palazzo dei Vicari” is located overlooking the spacious square of the same name and is the symbol of the village of Scarperia, as well as the only among the Tuscan palaces that evokes so strongly the image of Florence. The name comes from the “Vicari” representatives of the Republic of Florence in the territory that lived in the building. The current appearance is the result of a series of restoration works that lasted from 1932 to 1937 and that concerned the crowning battlements that runs along the walkway. Now battlements and corbels decorate the facade and the entire building giving a new “medieval image” that draws from the model of the Florentine Palazzo of Signoria.
