Canaiolo Bianco is a traditional grape of Tuscany, today almost disappeared. Despite it falls under the disciplinary of the DOC of Carmignano and Valdinievole together with Malvasia Bianca Lunga and Trebbiano Toscano, very few hectares remain in cultivation and there are no new plants for at least ten years. The situation is made even more confused by the fact that in the area the white Canaiolo grape is often confused with Vernaccia di San Gimignano. In the area of Orvieto the white Canaiolo vine is known as “Drupeggio”. White Canaiolo is a variety allowed in several DOC including Orvieto DOC in Umbria, where it is usually mixed with Trebbiano, Verdello, Grechetto and Malvasia Toscana and in the red and rosé wines of Barco Reale of Carmignano DOC where it can be mixed with Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Grati have been growing and producing wine and oil in Rufina for five generations. The sixteenth-century villa of Vetrice has developed around an ancient watchtower of the thirteenth century. The tradition continues and the current descendants no longer descend to Florence with the cart pulled by the majestic white oxen to deliver their flasks to city customers. Now await them in the tasting room of the farm. Part of the complex are the vinsantaia, the rural buildings and the private family chapel. A hospitality with a genuine taste as usual welcome.
