The hortus conclusus (Latin, translatable in Italian as “fenced garden”) is the typical form of a medieval garden, mainly linked to monasteries and convents. As the name says, it is a green area, usually small, surrounded by high walls, where the monks cultivated essentially plants and trees for food and medicine purposes. The decorative function was almost unknown.
