San Gimignano takes its name from the Holy Bishop of Modena, Gimignano, who saved the city from the barbarian hordes. Its demographic and commercial development was favored by its splendid location along the Via Francigena or Via Romea, the famous road that connected Rome to the most important countries of Europe and that represented the development of trade of that time.

The Giachi family has been involved in the production of wine for over three centuries, since, in 1720, Bartolomeo Giachi left Florence to move to Ulignano, settling permanently with his family in the prestigious residence, farm centre of very high-quality vineyards. The founder of the family, understood the strategic importance of the place chosen for residence, erected the first walls close to the Via Francigena; the place where he laid the first stone was baptized by him “Tenuta Torciano” as erected on the lands bathed by the ancient “Borro di Torciano”.
