The prized black truffle of Tuscany is a variety of Tuber melanosporum Vitt. widespread in the areas where there are limestone outcrops in the province of Florence, Arezzo and Siena. Specifically, it has been found in the areas of Chianti, Casentino, Val di Chiana and Mugello. It is wrinkled to the appearance, dark and with small warts, with light and thin veins, of variable dimensions between that of a walnut and that of a grapefruit, and emits, like the other varieties of the family, an intense characteristic perfume.
