Heroic viticulture refers to a type of cultivation carried out in extreme conditions compared to traditional cultivation. Usually the plots of this kind of viticulture are small, but of high quality. The concept of heroic viticulture has been present in the Italian specialized press since the early fifties. In the past the distinction between ordinary vineyards and those where heroic viticulture is practiced was of a qualitative type and generally referred to whole geographical areas, such as the Cinqueterre or the Valtellina.
