The foundation of San Gimignano is lost in the mists of time: legend tells that in 63 B.C. the two brothers Muzio and Silvio, young patricians who fled from Rome because accomplices of Catilina, took refuge in Val d’Elsa and built two castles: That of Mucchio and that of Silvia, future San Gimignano. The first historical document that attests the name of the city is dated August 30, 929 when Hugh of Provence gives the bishop of Volterra the mountain called “prope Sancto Geminiano adjacent”. It is likely that the name San Gimignano derives from the name of the bishop of Modena, when – also in this case the legend says – the saint during the barbarian invasions saved the city from the threat of Totila, appearing miraculously on the walls.
